Flag of the Republic Sakha, located in Far East Russia. the largest republic in Russia.

Capital Yakutsk being the worldst coldest major city (to give idea of general Sahka life.)

As part of the early-mid 17th century, the Russians took control of the area and named it Yakutsk Oblast in the Tsardom of Russia. This forced the indigenous peoples to pay tribute of furs. The Sakha population significantly decreased by 70% after the initial conquest, although the Imperial period also allowed the Yakuts to expand their territory from the middle Lena along the Vilyuy River. This led to the displacement of other indigenous groups. In the later stages of the Russian Civil War, Yakutia experienced some of the final battles. In 1922, the Bolshevik leaders re-organized Yakutsk Oblast as the autonomous Yakut ASSR. During the Soviet era, many Western Slavs, particularly Russians and Ukrainians, migrated to the area. On 27 September 1990, the region was renamed as Yakutskaya-Sakha Soviet Socialist Republic and on 27 December 1991, it became the Republic of Sakha.
